JCPenney sent out 10 million copies of its Christmas catalog during five weeks starting in late August. The redesigned book features merchandise grouped by themes such as “gifts under $25,” “gifts for him or her,” “gifts for home” and “gifts for nostalgic memories.”

“Items are easy to find so customers spend less time shopping and more time with friends and family,” said John Irvin, president of catalog and Internet for J.C. Penney Co., in a statement.

The 8-inch by 11-inch catalog will offer 2,240 items on 532 pages as well as gift certificates for the indecisive. Each edition weighs 1.9 pounds and is half an inch thick.

The 2002 Christmas edition does not have an order form. Instead, section guides on every right-hand page refer consumers to either the company's Web site (www.jcpenney.com) or its call center (1-800-222-6161).

Penney is guaranteeing Christmas Eve delivery for all orders placed by 10 a.m. CST on Dec. 23. Customers wishing to avoid prying eyes can also arrange to have their purchases shipped to retail stores throughout the country, where items can be held for pickup.

Parents wishing to accompany tiny tots with their hearts all aglow will be pleased to know, as the cataloger notes, that using all the coffee makers the catalog and Web site will sell, enough coffee could be made to keep the city of Boston awake for three days.

The catalog's offerings range in price from $7 for National Football League bed sheets to $2,499 for the Mo-Rad 1500 electric scooter. With every purchase of one featured item, the America's Bravest Fire Engine, Penney will make a contribution to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

As an additional incentive, JCPenney is hosting a sweepstakes. Prizes range from a Jeep Wrangler to Jeep brand sports apparel and equipment.

During the last three months of 2001 total catalog sales for JCPenney amounted to $1.28 billion. For the year catalogs sold $3.35 billion in merchandise, of which $324 million was generated online. The retailer did not comment on its Christmas catalog circulation figures during the holiday 2001 season.

In the second quarter of 2002, the latest available at deadline, the company's catalog sales were down 21.4% from second quarter 2001 (the company did not release exact sales figures). JCPenney attributed this to softer demand, a reduction in circulation quantities and management's decision to require payment at the time of order placement.

The Plano, TX-based company has published its Christmas catalog since 1963. In 2001, the year's catalog expenses made up $269 million of its $947 million advertising costs.
