Strongmail is expected today to announce Strongmail 4.0, the latest version of the e-mail marketing application designed to work with the company's e-mail infrastructure technology.

According to Strongmail's vice president of market and product strategy, Tricia Robinson-Pridemore, updates to the company's offering include a better user interface and an ability to work with multiple databases.

"The whole system has a new user interface," said Robinson-Pridemore. "It also has an exceptional ability to reach into multiple data sources. Customer data that you need to use for e-mail is not always in the same file. What you can do [with Strongmail 4.0] is move in and out of those sources and build segments."

She added the new capability aims to address marketers' need to centralize their e-mail efforts.

"In the past we used e-mail marketer strictly as a promotional tool or maybe for a newsletter," she said. "Now as e-mail has become more pervasive throughout the organization, they're using it for service notifications, anything transactional, purchase confirmations. And those transactional e-mails that we all get: That's what marketers want a piece of. We're trying to provide the tool so they can can truly look at e-mail as one centralized channel."

Current customers should get the updated product automatically, she said.

Robinson-Pridemore said Strongmail is also debuting SMS capabilities today.
