AOL Closes Another Call Center

AOL announced it will close a call center in Oklahoma City at the end of January, as part of its transitions from a business based on user subscriptions to one relying on advertising revenue.

The announcement adds about 900 employees to the number that AOL will lay off through call-center closings. In late October, the Virginia-based company gave notice that it will shutter call centers in New Mexico and Arizona, laying off 1300 employees.

At that time, AOL said those closings were part of a previously announced plan to restructure the company to take better advantage of the vitality of online advertising. AOL has said it will continue to offer dial-up Internet access to customers, but it will not actively market the service.
