AOL Spammer Pleads Guilty

A Brooklyn man pleaded guilty yesterday to spamming more than 1.2 million AOL subscribers.

Adam Vitale, 26, pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan to breaking anti-spam laws and reportedly faces up to 11 years in prison.

Vitale was caught making a deal with a government informant to send spam in return for 50% of the resulting profits, prosecutors said. The deal reportedly resulted in spam being sent to more than 1.2 million AOL addresses.

According to prosecutors, Vitale and an accomplice, Todd Moeller, used multiple servers and forged headers to get past AOL’s spam filters. Forging headers is against federal law.

Vitale is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 13.

Moeller faces the same charges as Vitale.
