Visant Corp., a direct marketer and publishing services firm, posted a net loss of $2.7 million for the first quarter, compared to a net loss of $1.1 million in the prior year.

The Armonk, NY company reported net sales of $247 million for the quarter ended March 28, a 3% decrease from $255.9 million last year.
The firm’s marketing and publishing services segment posted net sales of $99.8 million for the quarter, an 8% decrease from $108.1 million in the prior year.

Management attributed this to lower direct marketing and sampling volumes compared to last year.
