Direct had a full house for this year's list roundtable. Considering all the additional responsibilities on brokers' plates, that's impressive...

August is here — time for the List Vision conference and Direct's annual list roundtable.

And we've got a treat for you this year.

Guess what our panelists talked about in the roundtable that starts on page 25?

Lists.

Huh?

That's right.

The main subject in our last few roundtables was consolidation — that is, the purchase of several list companies by InfoUSA.

That's still an important topic, but even Vin Gupta might agree at that there's not much new to add. (Not yet, anyway.)

The other recurring topic has been the challenge of finding new talent. Where are the new Adrea Rubins, Lon Mandels, Ralph Drybroughs, Ben Perezes and Larry Mays?

So we asked list companies to send newcomers this year, although we had a little trouble defining the term. Does this mean someone who moved over from the client side at age 67?

Not quite. As you can tell from the photos, we found six new faces, future List Leaders all.

Besides being young, each one proved to be articulate, motivated and full of insights.

ALC's Fran Green, who came up with this idea, was asked to moderate the forum. And the timing was great — she also happens to be this year's List Leader. (Want to see Fran roasted? The List Leader dinner is Monday, Aug. 1 at the New York Marriott Marquis. It starts at 6 p.m.)

Just because they're young doesn't mean our panelists are inexperienced.

Each one has handled formidable marketing challenges for their clients. And they were willing to talk about them.

So congratulations to Fran and the whole panel. And there's one more thing.

We've all heard the dire predictions about the list business.

Don't believe them.

With talent like this at the ready, the best days are yet to come.

See you at List Vision.
