Tongue well in cheek though you were, it is interesting to see what happens when one applies the logic of direct marketing legislation to TV advertising. And you didn't even get into the sneaky tactic of product placement in the actual show content.

Of course, we can opt to turn off our TV sets altogether, thus avoiding all kinds of "junk," both commercial and programming. Then we would have more time to talk to our spouses (bad idea, possibly leading to higher divorce rates), or perhaps to read ... maybe even our junk mail!
