I vote for herd. Not only is it an accurate description of the scene during cocktail hour in the exhibit hall, but can also be a spin on the great Abbott and Costello routine:

A herd
Heard of what?
Direct Marketers
Sure I've heard of direct marketers
No, I mean a direct marketer herd
What do I care if a direct marketer heard? I didn't say anything to be ashamed of.
